Naufplion is only 2 hours distant from Athens by car and along with Monemvasia, are among the 2 cities of the Peloponnese with the most historic character. The interesting and most attractive part of Naufplion is the old historic section and is without doubt the best area to stay in as the newer section is without much charm.
On a small rocky peninsula jutting into the deeply indented Argolic Gulf and to the west of the 'thumb' of the hand-like peninsula of the Peloponnese is where Naufplion is situated. Between 1829 and 1834 it was the seat of Greek government and it was here that Greece's first prime minister, Kapodhistrias, was assassinated.
One of the prettiest cities in Greece, its narrow streets facing away from the sea to the sheltered northern harbor, with old balconied and shuttered houses rising up along the north slope of the hill above the bay.
Overlooking all is the very large and well maintained medieval castle of Palamidi which protected the town and shouldn't be missed!! Naufplion, in its old quarter is full of little quaint streets while its harbor area has plenty of benches and a good views. There are a lot of little stores and places to eat. If you spend the night anywhere in the Peloponnese do it in old Naufplion or Monemvasia. Its very, very popular so better book Naufplion in advance. If Naufplion is all booked then Tolo is the nearby beach town alternative with ease of access to Naufplion and a nice long sandy beach to boot.
